FloralArea

AI-powered algorithm for automated calculation of floral area from images to support plant and pollinator research

Quantifying floral display area is essential for understanding which plants attract pollinators—but manual measurements are slow and inconsistent. Researchers at Penn State developed FloralArea, an AI-powered workflow that automatically measures flower surface area from photos using deep-learning segmentation models. The tool achieved strong agreement with manual ImageJ measurements (R² = 0.93) while reducing processing time by more than 99%. By making floral-trait quantification fast, consistent, and scalable, FloralArea opens new opportunities for large-scale pollinator studies, restoration planning, and breeding programs focused on pollinator-friendly plants.
