Dinner and a Workshop: Machine Learning for Ecologists (Offered Apr 8, 2025)
Join us Tuesday, April 8th, 5:30 - 8:00PM, at Penn State's University Park campus for this free, fun, and in-person event!
Note: This workshop has passed. Please watch this page as we add content from the workshop to this page.
Learn how to incorporate iNaturalist images to train a machine learning algorithm using Python code in Google Colab. Use pre-built code to automatically identify categorize species from photographs over dinner during this two-hour guided workshop.
This workshop is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience with coding in Google Colab. We welcome K-12 educators, Penn State students and faculty to register.
Space is limited!
The first 20 registrants will be able to attend. You'll receive a follow-up email with event details once your registration is confirmed.

Refer to the video below to explore how to download iNat data to apply towards our workshop's machine learning demonstration. During this workshop, we are all using the same .csv file to run through the workshop demonstration. This video guide will show you how to access iNat datasets for other taxa if you'd like to apply these techniques to other applications in the future.
This workshop's instructor is Dr. Jaya Sravanthi Mokkapati. Jaya is a postdoctoral researcher and entomologist in Dr. Christina Grozinger's Lab. Her research interest include the incorporation of AI and machine learning into the study of bee flight and behavior.
